BEYOND DIVERSITY LADAKHIS CELEBRATE NEW YEAR IN THE CAPITAL
New Delhi, January 11, 2017 - Ladakh Student Welfare Society Delhi (LSWSD) in collaboration with Live to Love celebrated its Annual Day cum Losar on the theme “Beyond Diversity: Respect, Understanding and equality”.
His Eminence Khamdrak Rinpochey Jigme Tenzin Wangpo was Chief Guest on the occasion. A galaxy of dignitaries present on the occasion included Former Union Minister P. Namgyal, Padma Shree Morup Namgyal, J&K Academy of Art, Culture and Language Officer Tsewang Paljor, Young Drukpa Association (YDA) President Ngawang Rinchen Wacher, Vice President Venerable Tsetan Tashi, nuns, MIMC founder venerable Sanghasen and huge number of parents were present to grace the occasion. The eventful day commenced with the lightening of holy lamp “Chotemy” by the Chief Guest followed by Chief Guest’s special talk on “Beyond Diversity: Respect, Understanding and equality. Appreciating the student efforts to preserve the culture and heritage of Ladakh through such celebration, His Eminence stressed upon the student for developing respect, understanding and equality among each other to have a harmonious life. He added that apart from modern education student must acquire knowledge about cultural ethos of Ladakh to preserve its identity.
Student of LSWSD exhibited variety of traditional food stall to showcase the local cuisine including the typical dished “Paba, Thukpa, Yosza (Roasted Barley, Chu-Tai etc and visitor highly appreciated the student efforts. First year student Stanzin Stobjor mentioned how they prepare such local food every year to exhibit to the Delhietes during Losar celebration. Another LSWSD Student Angmo said that Paba was most difficult to prepare during such exhibition.
A short skirt highlighting the exemplary communal harmony of Ladakh was also part of the celebration applauded by the jam packed audience of more than 2000. A vibrant colourful culture programme showcasing the Ladakh's pride, unity and diversity enthralled the audience. A quiz competition focusing on Ladakh history, culture and geography conducted among student unions of Jammu, Chandigarh, Dehradun and Delhi, clearly exhibited an interest in home culture and also a need to have further education in the future among the youth about their root; All Ladakh Student Union Dehradun bagged the first prize of he quiz competition. Later Chief Guest and dignitaries released a Guide Book title “Forever Ladakh”, published by Roli Books, and a Dual Musical Album “Losar 2017” coproduced by Live to Love and YDA Ladakh. Besides Best Dressed Competition, lucky draw with exciting prizes, including a bicycle sponsored by Let Us Cycle, and prize distribution were also part of the celebration.
Earlier, presenting the welcome speech Ngawang Rinchen Wacher, representing Live to Love, elaborated on various activities undertaken jointly with YDA Ladakh, Live to Love's onground partner. The activities include free eye camp, stray animal care and management centre, tree planting initiative, cycle yatra, pad yatra as well as water protection in the Himalayan region. Wacher also mentioned that supporting such celebration is an ongoing initiative to preserve the distinct culture of Ladakh as well as to provide an opportunity to the budding student to showcase their hidden talents.
The event was also supported by Roli Books, Let Us Cycle, Waterkeeper Alliance and Himalayan Glacier Waterkeeper.
