10th Edition of the Merchants and Bankers Golf Tournament hosted by Rotary Club of Madras
Rotary Club of Madras, an institution of 87 years, is all set to host the 10th edition of its annual “Merchants and Bankers Golf Tournament” presented by Omega Healthcare on Friday, 27th January, 2017 at the Tamil Nadu Golf Federation (TNGF) - Cosmo Golf Course, Chennai.
Around 200 golfers, drawn from corporates, bankers, fields like medicine, law, architecture, education, and also government service, armed forces and the Consular corps, will congregate to support and enhance the various community building projects undertaken by the 1929 inaugurated Rotary Club of Madras.
The funds raised from this event will be used towards the Club’s ongoing projects, which include New School Buildings and Education Scholarship Programs, New Building for Women Empowerment Centre at Sembakkam, Vocational Training Programs at Selaiyur, Sembakkam and Gummidipoondi, Water and Sanitation Projects amongst others.
The 10th Rotary Club of Madras Merchants and Bankers Golf Tournament will be played on the Strokeplay format with Single Peoria handicapping system applied through a ‘hidden holes’ methodology. There are prizes for the corporate winning and runners-up teams and individual prizes for handicap categories 0-15 and 16 & above as also overall prizes for the winner, runner-up and the Ladies winner. The winner and the runner-up amongst the Rotarians will also be felicitated. As a part of the 10th Anniversary, there is a special prize for the overall 10th placed finish.
The third-oldest Rotary Club of India, after Calcutta and Bombay, will host the prize distribution gala dinner on Saturday, 28th January 2017 at the prestigious Taj Coromandel, the hospitality partner for the event.
Over the past nine years, the event has provided countless networking opportunities for the participants with engagement amongst the appropriate business fora using the Rotary platform being the common denominator.
Omega Healthcare, the presenting sponsors of the 9th edition played last year in Bangalore, have once again reiterated their commitment to the cause by aligning for the second consecutive year. The drive comes from the top as their CEO Gopi Natarajan has even persuaded Olympic Golf Gold Medalist Justin Rose, as they are both friends, to recognize and support our tournament and fund raising efforts, by getting Justin Rose to personally autograph merchandise which will be auctioned during the prize presentation dinner. Justin and his wife Kate do a lot of charity work themselves through their own Kate and Justin Rose Foundation and when he heard about the Rotary Club of Madras event and the charity work it supports, he didn’t hesitate even for a second, to present to us , a golf T Shirt, autographed by him, for auction.
Indian legends Jeev Milkha Singh and Arjun Atwal have also thrown their hats in the ring to lend a helping hand, as even their signed merchandise will be auctioned on the 28th of January.
Co-sponsors Suryoday lead the line along with IIFL, AVM Balasubramaniam, 24 Organics, Access Healthcare and a host of other sponsors who have contributed to the giveaways and prizes on offer including Qatar Airways.
As a testimony to large-scale projects undertaken by the Rotarians in the areas of community development, education, vocational training, women empowerment, water and sanitation along with advocating to make the planet a greener place to live in, many new sponsors come on board year after year.
The Rotary Club of Madras Club pioneered the red measles and polio inoculation campaigns, the first to fully complete the total construction of a Tsunami devastated village of Suleri Kattukuppan, near Mahabalipuram, restarted the temple tank renovation and water recharging programs.
For 10 years, Rotary Club of Madras has used the medium of Golf to raise funds for its various projects and having acquired the Merchants and Bankers tag, the Club seeks to emulate the efforts of its brethren, worldwide in raising substantial sums of money to plough back into society.
There are many golf tournaments that are held in the city, but this one is for Merchants and Bankers, and also welcomes other centres. This is a serious and competitive golf tournament, the rules are strictly applied, and winning it is a reflection of just how good the golfers are.
Being a professionally run event, the management of it has been entrusted to the well-known Brandon de Souza and his company, Tiger Sports. The Club is fortunate enough to have as members of our Club, golfers who are International and national referees such as Mr. Ishwar Achanta, international golf administrator and member, The Asia Pacific Amateur Golf Federation committee, to ensure that the event is conducted to the highest standard.
