Mumbai, 22 December 2016: Vivekanand College of Arts, Science and Commerce on Thursday held a one-day Science Mela for the benefit of students from various schools in Chembur and elsewhere. The event was to mark the National Mathematics Day, the birth anniversary of eminent mathematician Sreenivasa Ramanujan.
Students from various departments such as physics, chemistry, mathematics, microbiology, biotechnology, computer science, information technology and psychology put together posters, live experiments, and more than hundred exhibits.
The science exhibition was held in the campus. Seven well-equipped undergraduate and post-graduate laboratories of various departments were opened to students from twenty five schools and seven colleges from Chembur and Vashi.
Students were exposed to basic techniques in all the science subjects. Prominent among the exhibitions were: bioluminiscent micro-organism, Rueben tube, hydraulic lift, preparation of gold nanoparticles, live workshop on blogging and photoshop, internet of things, cloud computing, molecular biology, etc.
“The intention of the science exhibition was to inculcate scientific temperament and thinking among the young students. Such exhibitions on science definitely go a long way in creating interest among the student community,” said Principal Dr Jayashree Phadnis.
“It is a great opportunity for our students to explain to all the enthusiastic visitors from nearby schools and junior colleges about various scientific experiments. Experimental science is essential in inspiring young minds with a desire to pursue science subjects in future,” Mr. Suman Ganger, Convener of the Mela and Asst. Professor of Microbiology Department.
