A solar power plant helps to convert solar energy into electricity by using photovoltaic (PV) and focuses a large portion of sunlight into a small beam. Photovoltaic then converts light into electric energy by using the photoelectric effect.

Shri Vinay Pratap Singh, Additional Deputy Commissioner, Gurugram said, “I would like to congratulate and appreciate Shiv Nadar School (Gurugram) for installing a 50 kW solar power plant at the school premises along with a NET metering facility.  I hope that others will be inspired to take similar initiatives for us to build Gurgram as a solar city.”

Speaking at the occasion, Ms. Monica Sagar, Principal of Shiv Nadar School, Gurugram said, “The installation of the solar power plant is a part of our continued effort to operate in an eco-friendly manner and contribute to the country’s mission of adopting renewable energy sources.  The plant has been in operation for three months now and has not only helped us reduce our electricity costs phenomenally, but it will also feed the power back into the electricity grid through the NET metering facility on days when the school is not operational.”

Post the inauguration, a workshop on ‘Mandatory installation of rooftop solar photovoltaic power plants’ was conducted to create awareness amongst the educational institutions, social sector organizations, industrial and commercial sector organizations, and RWAs to educate them about its benefits.  The workshop was organized by Department of New and Renewable Energy, Haryana and HAREDA with the support of Bureau of Energy Efficiency, Govt. of India.  A group of students from Shiv Nadar School also gave a presentation on the Green School Programme that lays down conditions of building resource-efficient structures, optimizing energy efficiency, minimizing waste-generation, recycling water and providing healthier space for occupants as compared to conventional buildings.

Also, present at the event were Col. Kanwar Pratap Yadav, Chairperson, Gurgaon Chapter of HPSC; Mr. Anurag Bajpai, ECBC Expert from Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), Government of India; Mr. Vikrant Sharma, Scientist, National Institute of Solar Energy (NISE), MNRE, and representatives from other educational institutions and government departments.
