Monday, 20 December, 2016:  Shiv Nadar School, a part of the Shiv Nadar Foundation, announced the successful conclusion of the North Zone Championships of the renowned RoboCupJunior, a project oriented education initiative that organizes robotic events for young students across the world. Organized by the Indian RoboCup Junior Foundation on December 17-18, the competition witnessed participation from over 22 schools across North India. The winning teams will compete in the Indian National competition to be held in January, 2017. The team that wins the nationals will be given an opportunity to take part in the international competition, be held in Japan in July, 2017

The participating teams’ robots were judged on their ability to successfully negotiate rooms, hallways, ramps and hazards (gaps in the line, speed bump, intersections and obstacles) without human interaction. The robots had to successfully complete the challenge called the Rescue Mission where they had to locate natural disaster victims from within a building, where waiting rescue personnel required robotic assistance due to the high degree of potential danger. The robot was required to be fully autonomous and carry out the mission without any assistance. On locating the victim, the robots needed to carefully transport the victim back to the safe zone.

The competition was divided into two age categories – Primary (for ages 11 – 14 years) and Secondary (for 14 – 19 years). The winners selected for the Nationals included:
·         Primary Category: Highest Performer given to Team RoboX from the Shiv Nadar School, Noida. Shiv Nadar School, Faridabad; DAV School Ludhiana, Grain Chamber Public School New Additionally teams from Mandi Muzaffarnagar and Bal Bharti Public School also qualified for the Nationals

About RoboCupJunior:

RoboCupJunior is a project-oriented educational initiative that sponsors local, regional and international robotic events for young students. It is designed to introduce RoboCup to primary and secondary school children, as well as undergraduates who do not have the resources to get involved in the senior leagues yet. The tournament offers to the participants the chance to take part in international exchange programs and to share the experience of meeting peers from abroad.

RoboCupJunior offers several challenges, each emphasizing both cooperative and competitive aspects. For young students, RoboCupJunior provides an exciting introduction to the field of robotics, a new way to develop technical abilities through hands-on experience with electronics, hardware and software, and a highly motivating opportunity to learn about teamwork while sharing technology with friends. In contrast to the one-child-one-computer scenario typically seen today, RoboCupJunior provides a unique opportunity for participants with a variety of interests and strengths to work together as a team to achieve a common goal.
