For the first time in Karnataka, Manipal Hospitals Performs Kidney Transplant Using Assisted Robotic Surgery
Bengaluru, December 21, 2016: Manipal Hospitals scripted a rare and challenging surgery of kidney transplant using robotic assisted surgery to become the first hospital in the state of Karnataka to use robotics for renal transplant. This medical feat was achieved with Da Vinci Robotic Surgical System which integrates advanced computer technology to perform complex procedures with more precision, flexibility and control.
Kidneys of Mr. Sarojit Adak, aged 35 years had detoriated and he was suffering from loss of weight , poor health and with the only option of doing regular dialysis. His mother- in- law, aged 48 decided to give her son in law a new lease of life and became the donor. Similarly, in another case Mr. Sudipta Kumar Bala, aged 29 from Orissa suffered severe acidity and breathing issues and vomiting and loss of appetite which was later diagnosed as complete kidney failure. His mother aged 50 years came forward to save her done and donated her kidney. Post explaining the procedure that will be used, to both the families, they readily embraced this new technology (robotic assisted surgery) which would not only reduce hospitalization stay for the recipient but also ensure that the surgery less painful and invasive.
Dr. Sudarshan Ballal and Dr. Deepak Dubey with the patients
Explaining the procedure for this surgery Dr. Deepak Dubey, Consultant Urology & Renal Transplant , Manipal Hospitals who conducted the surgery successfully said, “Robotic surgery is 100% accurate and safe. The surgeon thus can operate with enhanced precision, dexterity and control even during the most complex procedures. The benefits of this surgery are immense as there are fewer complications such as surgical site infection, lesser pain and blood loss, quicker recovery and smaller scars. The patient and the donor are doing very well and have recovered completely.”
A small cut was made around the umbilicus and kidney was inserted into the recipient’s body. The blood vessels of the kidney were sutured to the blood vessels of the recipient using the Robot. Robotic instruments have 360 degree rotation compared to the human wrist which has only 270 degree rotation and provides the surgeon with a 10x magnified, high-definition, 3D-image of the body's intricate anatomy using key-hole technique. Complete rehearsal was done a day prior to the procedure and the patient and family were given all the relevant information.
Speaking on the occasion Dr. Sudarshan Ballal, Chairman, Manipal Hospitals said, “Reasonable costs, less pain, minimal invasion, early recovery and increasing awareness have put India on the global map when it comes to robot-assisted surgeries across the health spectrum and the country is poised to take a leap soon. Robotic procedures have started to cover a wide spectrum of procedures —cardiac, urology, general surgery, thoracic, gynaecology, head and neck, vascular, paediatrics etc.”
Robotic surgery is not only been used for transplant but also to extract the donor kidney and the donor can get back home in less than 24 hours. Previously, a kidney was removed from a live donor using open nephrectomy, which required a large incision and at least a week or more in the hospital for recovery. This technique has been pioneered in India and Indian surgeons are travelling abroad to demonstrate it in centres in the USA and Europe. The other centres which have done good numbers are Turkey and Belgium.
Speaking about his experience the recipient Mr. Sarojit Adak said , “It was a very pleasant experience as I feel healthier with almost no pains. It’s unbelievable how technology can make such a big procedure look like a normal surgery. I am thankful to Manipal and the doctors and my experience here has been gratifying. I have recovered and look forward to my routine work now.”
