Mumbai, November 10, 2016  Bayer’s global science exhibition, based on the company’s mission statement: ‘Science For A Better Life’ has come to Mumbai as part of a world tour. It will be open to the general public from November 10 – 13, 2016 from 10 am to 6 pm at the Nehru Science Centre in Worli. In India, the theme of the exhibition is ‘Making Science Make Sense’, which is Bayer’s flagship educational initiative that promotes science education through fun experiments.

Richard van der Merwe, Senior Bayer Representative, South Asia, inaugurated the exhibition today along with Prof. Man Mohan Sharma, renowned academician and recipient of the Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan for his contribution to the field of science education.

“Bayer India is proud to host this amazing exhibition in Mumbai as part of the world tour. At our exhibition, visitors can gain fascinating and informative insights into how science enriches our daily lives. The exhibits on display are taken from real-life, tangible examples and demonstrate how Bayer, through research and innovative products, is committed to human, animal and plant health”, said Richard van der Merwe, Senior Bayer Representative, South Asia.

A hands-on experience of a ‘Better Life’

The exhibits comprise of 21, two-meter high boxes with capital letters, each of which refers to a Bayer topic – from A for “Aspirin” and E for “Enhancing Global Food Security” to S for “Science”. Each box contains images and information on the scientific background and social aspects of the Bayer topic in question. Set up together, the boxes spell out Bayer's mission: ‘Science For A Better Life.’ Unlike most exhibitions where visitors are instructed not to touch the displays, the exhibits at the Bayer exhibition are specifically designed to be touched and explored.

The exhibition combines both interactive and informative elements, where visitors can learn more about science, scientific facts and innovations that have helped enhance our quality of life. For example, visitors can race against the clock and fight pests, diseases and weeds with Bayer products in a buzzer quiz, or insert the right building blocks into the DNA of wheat to block the plant’s stress gene and make it more robust. The letter C stands for cardiovascular health and centers on the tremendous strength of the heart. With each of its 80 beats a minute, it pumps 200 milliliters of blood through our bodies. Visitors can squeeze a small ball to experience how much strength is required for such a feat.

Bayer celebrated its 150th Anniversary in 2013, and since then, the ‘Science For A Better Life Tour’ has travelled the world welcoming almost 200,000 visitors in major cities such as London, Shanghai, New York and Sydney. Till date, the exhibition has travelled to 45 cities in 22 countries. This year, besides Mumbai, the tour has also stopped in Tokyo, Sao Paulo, Mexico-City and Zurich.

Besides experiencing the interactive exhibition, various activities have been specially customised for different stakeholders, including a Press Conference and guided tour for the media, sessions by Bayer internal experts on topics such as ‘Pet Care’, ‘Keeping our living spaces free from pests’, to name a few. The exhibition will also have workshops by renowned external experts representing various fields. Some of these sessions include a talk on ‘Diabetes & You’ by Prof. Shashank Joshi, Endocrinologist & Padmashree recipient; ‘Nutrition for a Better Life’ by Rujuta Diwekar, acclaimed nutritionist; ‘Trash to Toys’ by Ashok Rupner; insights into ‘Eye Health’ by Dr. Aniruddha Mahindrakar (Retina Specialist) and ‘Young Innovators’ by Shailesh Sansare, Innovators Club of India.

The exhibition will offer school students in particular an educational excursion to discover natural sciences, biology or applied chemistry, try out something new, understand scientific relationships and consolidate knowledge learned in school. Students will get to perform sensational experiments from Bayer’s Making Science Make Sense program that will help bring scientific theory to life.

In addition, there will be an interactive motion magic wall, fun games and activities, science shows and contests, origami workshops and daily on-the-spot quiz contests for visitors. The four-day exhibition expects to welcome over 3,000 visitors from the city.
