It doesn’t matter how awesome your PC is, if you pair it with a substandard PSU you could be inviting trouble. It’s time to make a wise choice by investing in a reliable 80 PLUS Certified PSU
BENGALURU, India – August 25, 2016 – Often misunderstood, the power supply is a frequently overlooked PC component. While some users choose a PSU on total wattage based on the false assumption that higher wattage means better performance, others settle for whatever comes installed in their PC. When it comes to PC building, coveted components such as the processor, video card or motherboard often grab the limelight, leaving the PSU as a secondary consideration. Buyers often fail to recognize that a good quality, efficient PSU can have significant contribution to the reliability and stability of a system, as well as the lifespan of the components within.
Further complicating the issue for customers in India, there are some power supplies on the market which carry fake ’80 PLUS’ badges. Even well-known international brands are misleading customers with fake badges. While a PSU may state “Up to 87% efficiency”, this is not the same as having achieved real 80 PLUS certification. Full 80 PLUS certification is a rigorous and fixed set of requirements and tests; “up to” results might only be possible at low temperatures or specific wattage loads.
Because of this, it’s a good idea to check your PSU is legitimately 80 PLUS certified before you buy, ensuring your computer’s power supply can deliver the wattage and efficiency it claims. You can do so by visiting the official 80 PLUS website www.80plus.org and searching for the relevant model number or brand. With the entire CORSAIR range of PSUs 80 Plus certified and tested, you’ll be sure to find every CORSAIR model officially listed, with precise test results and performance figures, providing complete peace of mind.
What does 80 Plus Certification mean?
In 2005, Tacoma, WA based Ecova Plug Load Solutions initiated the 80 PLUS® program. In 2007 Energy Star made 80 PLUS certification mandatory in order to bear the Energy Star logo. The 80 PLUS program tests computer power supplies for efficiency at 20%, 50% and 100% loads. Initially, power supplies only needed to be 80% efficient to earn certification. Over the years as power supplies became more and more efficient, new standards such as Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum were created. An 80 PLUS certified power supply is at least 80% efficient, which means in the conversion from AC to DC power, only 20% of power is lost as heat. Below are the different 80 PLUS levels and the efficiency requirements for each level:
Factors to consider when buying PSUs:
o Efficiency: A more efficient PSU makes for a more efficient PC. The higher the efficiency, the less power a PC will pull, saving you money in electricity and producing less heat and noise.
o Pick The Right Wattage: Use a PSU calculator web page or software to determine your requirements. If you plan to upgrade your system in the future, be sure to allow for extra wattage capacity.
o Get a modular PSU: Modular PSUs means you’ll only need to use the cables you need, eliminating extra wires that clutter a PC case and obstruct airflow.
o Voltage regulation and Overvoltage protection: If the output voltage exceeds a specified limit, the power supply shuts down. This protects the computer hardware from damage.
o Warranty: Look for reputable brands that offer solid warranties and after sales support.
While it might be tempting to opt for a low cost or non-80 PLUS certified PSU, opting for an officially qualified, 80 PLUS certified PSU is a great way to ensure your PC stays stable and efficient in the long run. To enjoy a safe and reliable computing experience, CORSAIR’s multi-award winning range of PSUs offer stability, efficiency and a wide range of features and extras to get the most out of your computer.
