Mumbai, June 29, 2016: VIBGYOR High Model United Nations (VHMUN), an initiative by the VIBGYOR HIGH Group of schools, organized its 6th edition at Hyatt Regency in Andheri from 23rd June to 25th June, 2016. The event witnessed the participation of over 500 delegates from more than 60 schools and colleges. VHMUN aims at fostering individual brilliance with a focus on international issues, while ensuring friendship and bonding among those with diverse interests. The event gives students an exposure to global issues, while also developing their interpersonal, social and problem solving skills.
An intellectual simulation of the United Nations, the VHMUN introduced a CRISIS committee this year that sprung into action at night to resolve a deadlock. One of the highlights of the event was the interactive session that the student delegates had with Mr. Gregory Dunn, Former Secretary General, Harvard Model United Nations, Boston (USA). The other keynote speakers were H.H.S Vishwanathan, Distinguished Fellow in the Observer Research Foundation and an expert in International Relations, New Delhi; and Ms. Kakoli Ray, Vice Consul, the US Consulate, Mumbai. The eminent speakers shared their vast and varied experience in International Relations & Diplomacy and prompted students to use the MUNing experience to their advantage.
Noted Educationist, Philanthropist and Social Activist, Dr Ajay Prabhakar and the well known journalist and Spokesperson of the All India Congress Committee, Ms Priyanka Chaturvedi graced the conference with their presence.
On the occasion, Mr. Rustom Kerawalla, Chairman and Managing Director of VIBGYOR High Group of Schools said, “At VIBGYOR High, we try to bring to the fore the inherent talents of students by providing them with unconventional platforms such as the VHMUN. The VHMUN is a forum where students with diverse views congregate, deliberate and resolve global issues. This conference builds acumen, brings finesse to leadership abilities and prepares students to meet real life challenges.”
Expressing her views on the event, Noopur Jatania, Secretary General, VHMUN said, “Providing delegates with the best MUNing experience has always been the goal of VHMUN. The 6th edition of VHMUN exceeded expectations with new committees, diverse topics of discussion and participation of delegates from all over India and abroad.”
There were 6 Committees present at VHMUN including the Security Council (SC), Historical Security Council (HSC), Disarmament and Security Committee (DISEC), Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), Human Rights Commission (HRC) and United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR). This year, the delegates discussed, debated and resolved some of the interesting and challenging topics such as Threat to International Peace and Security due to Islamic State (IS); Basic Level of Infrastructure and Standardised Law Enforcement and Policing in Member States; and Protecting the Civil, Political and Socioeconomic Rights of Refugees.
