Mumbai, 14 June: The Go Green Carnival held on 10 June in Vile Parle (East) saw enthusiastic participation from children, professionals and Mumbaikars concerned about the environment. The carnival, a flagship event of the ‘Go Green with Tetra Pak’ initiative, marked the culmination of a week-long programme that celebrated the enthusiasm and commitment shown by Mumbaikars towards recycling of used Tetra Pak cartons for over six years.
BMC (H) West Ward Officer Chandrakant Tambe, who was the chief guest at the carnival, lauded the efforts of Mumbaikars and RWAs towards this green cause and urged them to segregate waste for recycling. He also congratulated the collaborative efforts of RUR, Mumbai based environment group, retail chains Reliance Fresh and Sahakari Bhandar and Tetra Pak for educating citizens about the recyclability of Tetra Pak cartons and the importance of waste segregation and proper waste disposal through their Go Green with Tetra Pak initiative. Tetra Pak cartons are paper based cartons and can be recycled into useful items such as school desks, garden benches, and other stationery items.
Vinay Adhye, Vice President and Business Head, Sahakari Bhandar, said, “With the efforts of Tetra Pak and RuR, the past six years of Go Green Initiative have witnessed a commendable response by Mumbaikars committing to recycle used Tetra Pak cartons at Sahakari Bhandar stores. Being a responsible retailer, we strongly believe in contributing to the community. It is our utmost priority to garner support from people to recycle Tetra Pak cartons and drop them to nearest Sahakari Bhandar or Reliance Fresh store."
“Over the years we have seen increasing enthusiasm and participation from Mumbai citizens that instils motivation and conviction to drive the cause further. With the support from our partners, we have been able to contribute towards cleaning the city with the collection and recycling of used Tetra Pak cartons. We will continue to reach out to the public and urge them to contribute to collecting a greater number of Tetra Pak cartons for recycling,” said RUR Founder Monisha Narke.
Tetra Pak South Asia Markets Communications Director Jaideep Gokhale said, “The success of the Go Green with Tetra Pak initiative has been made possible by the support we have received from our committed partners and the shared responsibility of the people of this city. We are proud to have reached the 1,500,000 mark for collected cartons that have been converted into school furniture for underserved schools and the larger community. We will continue to reach out to the public and create awareness about the recyclability of Tetra Pak cartons that can help make a positive impact on the society.”
A plethora of green activities such as live ayurvedic cooking and demonstration on making recycled paper using Tetra Pak cartons were organised at the carnival. Mr Tambe also presented the Go Green Awards to concerned citizens who have demonstrated their commitment to drive environmental change in the city.
Other guests who were present at the carnival were environmentalists Ashok Ravat and Rishi Aggarwal, Indian Classical singer Asha Kandelwal and playback singer Vaishali Samant.
