Bengaluru, June 15, 2016. The European Union Film Festival premieres in Bengaluru on 20 June, 2016 with a screening of the French film "L'illusionniste", which has won many international awards. Organized by the Delegation of the European Union and embassies of EU Member States, the festival is being held in partnership with Alliance Francaise de Bangalore, Goethe-Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan, British Counciland Suchitra Film Society in Bengaluru. The Film Festival will be inaugurated on 20thJune at 4:30 pm at Alliance Francaisede Bangalore by Mr. Remi Rouillon, Vice Consul General of France in India& Mr. Chiranjiv Singh, President of the Alliance Française de Bangalore in presence of Mr. Dominic McAllister, Deputy High Commissioner, British Deputy High Commission, Mr. Leighton Ernsberger, Head of British Council Bengaluru and Skills India, British Council, Ms. Sarah Klare, Goethe-Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan, Mr. Shashidhara N - President Suchitra Film Society and Mr. Anand Varadaraj, Secretary - Suchitra Film Society.

EU Film Festival returns to Bengaluru with a feast of 23 award winning European movies

Given the increasing interest and demand for the festival, this time around the movies will be screened twice. One round of the European Union Film Festival will be hosted in Bengaluru across three venues -Alliance Francaise de Bangalore, Goethe-Institut / Max Mueller Bhavanand British Council from 20thJune to 2nd July 2016. The second screening of all movies (except 'Coriolanus') will be held at the fourth venue - Suchitra Film Society from 22nd June to 2nd July.

In its 21st edition, the festival features 23 exceptional new and award winning European films from Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, The Netherlands, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and the United Kingdom.This year the festival will screen movies from varied genres ranging from the comedy of the absurd to gripping drama, unexpected romance and heart-stopping action.

Speaking about the success of the European Union Film Festival in India, H.E. Mr. Tomasz Kozlowski, Ambassador of the European Union, said: “Films have a universal appeal. The European Union Film Festival has won a special place in the Indian film calendar and in the hearts of viewers by showcasing the wry, the unexpected, the beautiful and even the tragic events of ordinary lives in unfamiliar settings."

Mr. Remi Rouillon, Vice Consul General of France in Bangalore said, "Europe and India are very alike in more ways than one. One of the many similarities is that of the multiplicity of languages and cultures. The EUFF aims to showcase this diversity through the wonderful selection of films from each of the countries of the EU." He further added that “Bengaluru is proud to host the EUFF this year. Moreover, there will be 2 projections of the entire series, in different parts of the city, something that only Bangalore can boast of. This edition of the EUFF is very promising and will be a treat for the cinephiles of this city."

The EU film festival 2016 brings a selection of some of the finest and riveting films coming out of Europe today. Highlights from the festival include the stories of a ten year old abandoned boy ‘Jack’ who picks up his six-year-old brother and finds his way to life on his own; a great soldier of Rome who is despised by his own people and forced to turn to his enemy to find acceptance and anout-of-work illusionist who has a life-changing experience when he meets a young woman in Scotland.

Inaugural Movie L'illusionniste
L'illusionniste is an animated film from France directed by Mr. Sylvain Chomet. This revolves around a French illusionist who finds himself out of work and travels to Scotland, where he meets a young woman. Their ensuing adventure changes both their lives forever.

This film produced by Pathé International and Django Films in 2011 and has won many international awards including:
•    Best film European Film Awards, 2010
•    Nominated at the 68th Golden Globe Awards for Best Animated Feature Film.
•    César Award for Best Animated Feature, 2011
•    Nominated for Best Animated Feature Film in the 83rd Academy Awards.

Entry at all the venues will be on a first come, first served basis.However, for British movie 'Coriolanus' to be screened at the British Council, registration should be done by sending an email to Vani Shivakumar at vani.shivakumar@britishcouncil.org.

The festival currently running in Delhi, Chennai and Chandigarh will traverse through, Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Coimbatore, Ahmedabad, Pune, and Jodhpur over the next eight weeks.
