National, 18th May, 2016: Tata Power, India's largest integrated power company, has always undertaken various activities with an aim to improve the quality of life and uplift the economic conditions of its surrounding communities. To further empower communities at the grass root level, Tata Power has set up Tata Power Skill Development Institute (TPSDI) four Training Hubs in India to train, test, certify, and accredit over 2500 power sector workforce through modular skill development approach by FY16-17. The four training hubs set up are TPSDI Shahad and TPSDI -Trombay (Maharashtra), TPSDI - Maithon (Jharkhand) and TPSDI- Mundra (Gujarat), would aim to bridge the skills gap that exists across the value chain, and to help build a capable workforce.
Professional competence in the changing power sector requires not just cutting-edge technical skills, but also effective commercial and interpersonal skills. Despite the vital importance of industry-specific skills, training for these skills can be extremely difficult to source. Understanding this, TPSDI has employed a 360 degree approach for holistic development of workers in power-skills and encourage them to reach their full potential. The Training Hubs are fully equipped to conduct training across the a range of power sector skills like power system skills, power plant skills, and provide hands-on practice to trainees with state-of-the-art equipment. They house well equipped class rooms, computer labs, and electrical and mechanical labs with equipment for training. The electrical lab is for hands-on training in motors. drives. transformers, LOTO and other skills. The mechanical lab is equipped with all power plant related equipment like pumps, valves, gears, alignment, bearings, precision tools, gauges and LOTO, etc Speaking on this initiative, Mr. Anil Sardana, CEO & Managing Director, Tata Power, stated, "Skill development is an essential ingredient for India's future economic growth as the country transforms itself into an internationally competitive economy. Training at TPSDI ensures holistic development of trainees. In addition to technical skills, training at TPSDI also focuses on other dimensions of skill building, such as - numerical ability, science, basic
IT, industry orientation, communication, soft skills & personality development, work ethics, and places special emphasis on Safety. Health & Environment (SHE). The training consists of both knowledge and hands-on skills. The Institute consciously works towards providing greater access to its courses to the members of disadvantaged sections of the society as part of its Affirmative Action Policy and also reach out to those in the below-poverty-line (BPL) category. The Institute delivers its courses through a combination of Instructor-led delivery and also developing IT enabled platforms like e-Learning, online videos, etc. The skill development courses offered are not for profit and the fee structure is very nominal. TPSDI was launched on 9th Feb. 2015, as part of Tata Power centenary year celebration and, over the course of the year, 4 Training Hubs have been created and made operational benefitting over 1700 people.
