Colorectal Cancers on a rise in India: Colorectal cancer is the fourth most common cancer in men and the third most common cancer in women worldwide.  India has experienced a significant increase in the incidence of colorectal cancer during the past few decades. In recent years, we have observed an increased incidence of colorectal cancers in younger age group, and most of them are presented to a clinician at an advanced stage of the disease.  This makes the treatment more difficult and also with very less chances of recovery. There is a rising incidence of CRC in young adults from diverse geographic and ethnic backgrounds, which could be linked to environmental pollution or lifestyle factors, such as obesity, physical inactivity, and a diet rich in processed foods.

Dr Deepak Subramanian, Consultant – Minimal Access & Bariatric Surgery at Fortis Malar noted “The emphasis is to reduce permanent stoma for these patients by effective screening and treatment by a multi disciplinary team.”

Dr Mohan Rao, Senior Consultant – Minimal Access Surgery said “The Fortis Comprehensive Colorectal Clinic has been formed with a view to address this apparent issue. This centre will provide the whole gamut of treatments available for people with all types of colorectal diseases through highly experienced and qualified medical and surgical teams.”

The centre will also work towards creating awareness about the disease and precautionary measures, it will also promote regular screening amongst the high-risk groups so that early detection can be made common place, which in turn will aid better treatment outcome.
