The Tata group is displaying its end-to-end design to manufacturing capabilities at the DefExpo 2016 that kicked off today in Goa. These include a range of solutions in the defence and aerospace sector in areas such as design, engineering, programme management, manufacturing and product lifecycle management.
Defence and aerospace is a focus area of the Tata group. For FY 2015-16, the group’s estimated revenue from its defence and aerospace business is around Rs. 2,650 crores, growing at a compound rate of 18% in the last five years. This year, a significant number of Tata companies namely Tata Advanced Systems Limited, Tata Power Strategic Engineering Division (SED), Tata Motors, Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), Tata Technologies, TAL Manufacturing Solutions (TAL), Tata Advanced Materials Limited (TAML), Titan Company (Precision Engineering Division) and Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) are exhibiting their expertise and offerings at the DefExpo. Several of these companies work collaboratively to provide convergent defence solutions, and thus meet multiple requirements of their customers.· Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Tata Sons, focused on providing integrated solutions for aerospace, defence and homeland security. The company has become a significant player in the global aerospace & defence market, becoming the premier manufacturing partner for global OEMs, including Boeing, Airbus Group, Sikorsky Aircraft Corporation, Lockheed Martin Aeronautics, Pilatus Aircraft Ltd, Cobham Mission Equipment, RUAG Aviation, as well as the Government of India’s Defence Research & Development Organisation. It has demonstrated capabilities with established facilities throughout the entire aerospace and defence value chain from design, development, manufacture, and integration of complex equipment and systems, ranging from full aircraft assembly, missiles, command & control systems, unmanned aerial systems, radars, optronics and homeland security.
· Tata Power Strategic Engineering Division (SED) has been a leading private sector player in the indigenous design, development, production, integration, supply and life-cycle support of mission critical defence systems of strategic importance for nearly four decades. During the period, SED has partnered with the Ministry of Defence, Government of India, the Indian Armed Forces, DPSUs and DRDO in the development and supply of state-of-the-art systems, and emerged as a Prime Contractor to MoD for Indigenous Defence Production by securing orders for Pinaka Multi Barrel Rocket Launcher, Akash Army Launcher and Integrated EW System for the Indian Army; for the Akash Air Force Launcher and COTS-based Automatic Data Handling System for Air Defence; and Modernisation of Airfield Infrastructure (MAFI) for the Indian Air Force. SED is globally recognised for harnessing its ‘systems and engineering’ capabilities. It has designed and developed defence systems in the areas of weapon systems, network centric operations, air defence, electronic warfare, modernisation of airfield infrastructure, and optronics. SED has a dedicated R&D Centre at Mumbai and a production facility along with an R&D facility at Bengaluru.
· Tata Motors has been associated with the country's defence and security forces, for over 60 years, and has supplied over 1,00,000 vehicles to the Indian military and paramilitary forces in the logistic segment, so far. The company is present across the military spectrum providing all categories of vehicles (from logistics to combat) catering to the specific needs of the Indian Armed Forces – Light mobility, Mobility, Utility, Platforms, Engineering, Special Mission, Armoured, Command Posts, NBC and Infantry Combat Vehicles – making it the only Asian company to have this spread of competence. Tata Motors’ ERC (Engineering Research Centre) is the nerve-centre of the biggest research and development effort that any Indian corporation has mounted in recent times. Today, the company has about 5,500 people working in R&D spread across India and the rest of the world. In addition to the Indian Army, Navy, Air force and various Para-military forces, the company now also supplies to the defence forces of other countries including Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal and Tanzania, and to UN peace-keeping forces in conflict zones in Africa.
• Jaguar and Land Rover (JLR), a 100% owned subsidiary of Tata Motors, provides Tata Motors access to over 65 years’ experience of building exceptional all-terrain vehicles. Land Rover provides armed forces around the globe with light 4x4 vehicles (Defender Series) designed to meet a wide range of defence, reconnaissance, refugee protection and peacekeeping roles. All Land Rover defence vehicles are designed to meet the needs of the modern army, with optimal external dimensions, high payload to weight ratios, special fixings and quick strip down.
• Tata Technologies Limited (TTL), another key subsidiary of Tata Motors, is an engineering service company having considerable experience in providing design and development support on Defence & Aerospace projects. The company works with 12 of the most reputed OEMs in the Aerospace sector which include Fokker, BAE systems, Boeing, Airbus, Northrop Grumman & Bell Helicopter. TTL has acquired capabilities in the area of Aero Structures, Aero Interiors, Aero Systems and Manufacturing engineering. It also possesses virtual testing capabilities like anti-mine blast simulation to further support defence vehicle programs.
· TAL Manufacturing Solutions (TAL), a 100% subsidiary of Tata Motors, has gained extensive capabilities in the aerospace and defence sector. TAL has an expertise in providing flying parts and aero tooling. It has competencies developed in the area of sheet metal fabrication, welding and precision machining, advanced inspection and quality control equipment, surface treatment & surface enhancement facilities, capability for prototyping and high rate product ionization. In the defence spectrum they are a well-positioned solution provider for Armor hull/Capsule Manufacturing. TAL has designed and manufactured India’s first indigenous industrial articulated Robot: BRABO! This multi-axis articulated robot will enable cost affordable automation and is expected to significantly contribute to automation in the MSME (micro, small and medium enterprises) sector.
• Tata Advanced Materials Limited (TAML), a subsidiary of Tata Industries Limited, is a pioneer and leader in composite manufacturing and solutions, catering to the demands of the Aerospace, Space, Defence and Industrial Composites realms across the globe. With a 16-acre facility housing a state-of-the-art infrastructure of global standards, TAML employs more than 500 skilled engineers and operators. Composite Parts for Space Applications, Aircraft Structural Components, Engine Components, Personal and Vehicle Armour and Composite parts for various Industrial Applications are some of the products that TAML manufactures for various OEMs and Tier 1s.
• Tata Consultancy Services (TCS): For over two decades now, TCS has been delivering solutions and services to Aerospace and Defence industry (Indian forces and foreign OEMs) in the area of new System/ product development, manufacturing, installation, commissioning, sustenance, upgrades, maintenance, training and documentation – across Aircrafts, Submarines, and Armored vehicle platforms and the systems deployed on them. TCS has also developed and contributed in the C4ISR products and application development support to defence forces and OEMs.
· The Titan Company is a significant player in the precision engineering segment since 2002, leveraging its high precision manufacturing pedigree in watch making. The company’s Precision Engineering Division (PED) has four businesses: Precision components & sub-assemblies (PECSA), Automation Solutions, Tooling Solutions and PCB Assembly. These businesses cater to various aerospace industry needs including components & sub-assemblies, conceptualising, designing and building special purpose machines that automate assemblies, testing, inspection, etc., tooling solutions and prototyping and assembly of PCBs. Today, Titan’s PED produces components & sub-assemblies for a number of international majors like Hamilton Sundstrand, Pratt & Whitney Canada, Rolls Royce, Israel Aerospace Industries, Thales, IAI, Transdigm Group, Liebherr Aerospace, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited and ABB.
