Fortis Hospital Ludhiana celebrates World Kidney Day with Patients & their relatives


Ludhiana, March 9, 2016: To make World Kidney Day special for Dialysis patients and their relatives, Fortis Hospital Ludhiana celebrated this day in a very special manner. Programme was held under the supervision of Dr.Navdeep Khaira, Director Nephrology, Fortis Hospital Ludhiana.

Dr. Harpreet Brar, Admin Head, Fortis Hospital Ludhiana said, “Since the first campaign began over ten years ago, World Kidney Day (WKD) has turned into a global phenomenon, involving Medical professionals, government officials, the general public, celebrities and patients who take action locally.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Navdeep Khaira, Director Nephrology, Fortis Hospital Ludhiana said, “Kidney disease affects millions of people worldwide, including many children who may be at risk at an early age. It is therefore crucial that we encourage and facilitate education, early detection and a healthy life style to fight of preventable kidney diseases and to treat children with inborn and acquired disorders of the kidney worldwide.

Kidney disease is suspected if there is: Swelling of feet, Frothing of urine, Decrease in urine output, to frequent urination, especially at night .Weakness, tiredness, anemia . Screening for CKD should be done in high risk populations at regular intervals: Hypertension or history of cardiovascular disease.
• Diabetes or marked obesity.
• -Age > 60 years.
• -History of renal disease in the past or in the family.
• -History of taking nephrotoxic drugs
• -Before surgical procedures
• -Before procedures using radio-contrast e.g. CT scan & Angiography
• Nephrology referral is useful when:
- eGFR/1.73m2 is less than 30 or decreasing by more than 3 mL/min/year.
• -Urine albumin-to-creatinine ratio is more than 30 mg/g or there are RBC in urine.
• -Difficult to control BP.
Cake Cutting ceremony along with quick games and puzzles were organised for dialysis patients and their families. A Special question answers round was arranged to share their experiences about their kidney diseases and battling it by rising to the challenge.

Mr. Ankush Mehta, Medical Superintendent, Fortis Hospital Ludhiana said, “Kidney diseases are silent killers, which will largely affect your quality of life. There are however several easy ways to reduce the risk of developing kidney disease.
