Newcastle University ties-up with Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi

New Delhi, 20th February, 2016:- Newcastle University, UK, a major research-intensive
university, located in Newcastle upon Tyne in the north-east of England, has tied-up with IIT-D
on various research and education programmes.

Several areas of mutual interest and research synergy have been identified and discussed by
the two institutes. Though, initially focused on water resources the relationship has evolved
with strengths in the following areas: Cyber security, Transport and Environment, Antibiotic
Resistance, Quality and Innovation and Knowledge Transfer, Smart Grids and
Telecommunications and Catchment hydrology and water management. They are also looking
at further cooperation in the area of Nano-technology.

Commenting on the tie-up, Professor Richard Davies, Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Engagement and
Internationalisation, Newcastle University, UK, said: “Our vision is to be a world-class civic
university, which means we apply the excellence of our teaching and research to some of the
huge challenges society faces locally and globally. Our partnership with IIT-D will go a long way
towards helping us fulfil this ambition.

Professor Shashi Mathur, Dean, Alumni Affairs and International Programmes, Indian Institute
of Technology Delhi said: “IIT Delhi and Newcastle University, UK, under the existing
Memorandum of Understanding have undertaken various activities in the past and have thus
gained extensively through collaborative research. “
               
He added, “The two Institutes are committed to continue this mutually beneficial cooperation
by sharing knowledge and expertise to find solutions to the various challenging problems and
further collaborate in the identified priority areas of research. In addition to this, the two
Institutes are also committed to strengthening their academic relationship for mutual benefit.”
