Former PM and Nepali Congress President Sushil Koirala passes away at 79

Nepali Congress President Sushil Koirala was suffering from Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and  breathed his last in the wee hours of Tuesday morning, He was 79.

He had returned from the U.S. after undergoing a successful treatment for the lung cancer and is credited with promulgating the new constitution of Nepal in September last year.

Sushil Koirala was elected as a Prime Minister of Nepal on February 10, 2014 died at his residence in Maharajgunj in the outskirt of capital Kathmandu at 12.50 AM. Said by Nepali Congress general secretary Prakash Man Singh.

Sushil Koirala was elected from Banke and Chitwan constituencies in the second Constituent Assembly election of 2013, November 19.


Sushil Koirala  was not able to attend formal events on Monday.

Meanwhile, Nepali Congress Sushil Koirala postponed its electoral process prior to the General Convention, General Secretary Prakas Man Singh said.

Sushil Koirala was Born in Banaras, India, Sushil Koirala entered politics in 1954 and was in political exile in India for 16 years following the royal takeover of 1960.

The NC emerged as the largest party in the 2013 Constituent Assembly elections under Koirala's leadership.

Sushil Koirala was elected leader of the NC Parliamentary party securing 105 out of 194 votes against former Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba's 89 votes.
