Impressed by their energetic and agile performance, the Cultural Ministry of Russia has invited Kalari Gurukulam from Bengaluru to perform in Russia and wow the Russian audiences on how the ancient martial art is more than just a martial art. Twelve artists led by Guru Ranjan Mullaratt are travelling to Russia from Feb 5th to 7th 2016, representing Indian culture at the International arts festival to be held in central house for artists, Moscow
The team in preparation for its international performance has been practising vigoursly to showcase to the world, the rich heritage of India. The artists will be performing different acts to the international audience, giving a flavour of how martial arts training can be made not only interesting but also very practical.
Kalari Gurukulam has carved a niche for itself in the realm of martial art training. The institution headed by Ranjan Mullaratt is dedicated to train, promote, encourage and disseminate the art and science of Kalaripayattu. Located on the outskirts of Bengaluru, Kalari Gurukulam is the quintessential place of ancient art centre, featuring a traditional Kalari built with mud and other earthy elements as well as a modern studio for interested practitioners and trainees. With facilities for residential training as well as day-to-day training for Kalari enthusiasts, the Gurukulam promotes Kalaripayattu through public performances, awareness events, as well as publications.
Kalaripayattu remains relevant in modern times with its use of weaponry and treatment techniques. In ancient times, Kalaripayattu was a war form with the warriors priming their bodies and sharpening their reflexes. States Ranjan Mullaratt “The present day fast life too requires us to become the warriors of sorts. Present day combat situations too demand agile, strong and supple bodies which constantly obey the focused mind.”
The martial art form is now beyond martial art with international dancers, theatre artists and film personalities adapting it in their work, not just to gain flexibility, split second reflexes and to develop presence of mind and confidence, but to also to give a new interpretation to their art form.
